Submissions are now open for the National Scientific Image Competition 2023, sponsored by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). The competition is aimed at scientists active at a Swiss university or research institute. The deadline for submission of entries is 31 January 2023.
The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) invites scientists working at a university or research institute in Switzerland or Liechtenstein to submit their photographs and videos shot after 1 January 2022. A jury will review the works and reward their aesthetic quality and ability to inspire and amaze, convey or illustrate knowledge, tell a human story, or let us discover a new universe.
An international jury will meet at the beginning of the year and award a prize of 1,000 CHF for each category, plus 250 CHF for each distinction.
The categories are:
- Object of study
- Locations and instruments
- Women and men of science
- Video loops
The deadline for submissions is 31 January 2023.
An international, interdisciplinary jury will choose the winning entries, which will be showcased at Biel Photographic Days.
The competition has multiple aims: to highlight the growing role of images in scientific research, to reveal how scientific work is conducted and to give a face to the researchers conducting it. The competition also aims to encourage the media to use more images in their science coverage and make them accessible to the public through exhibitions.
More than 2,000 images have been submitted to the contest since 2017, including some from Università della Svizzera italiana:
- StCityFlyAround by Michele Lanza
- EclipseCity by Michele Lanza
- SmalltalkCity by Michele Lanza
- "Perhaps the take care of us start here" by Rosaria Del Giorno
- "The power of rapport" by Marta Fadda
- "Rapport building" by Marta Fadda
